To maintain a reliable, resilient and flexible grid for customers and communities, Minnesota Power is investing in transmission infrastructure. The ISA Transmission Project in northeastern Minnesota is an important part of supporting and strengthening the grid as the demand for energy grows, more renewable energy comes online and the nation makes strides toward a clean-energy future.

About The Project

  • A new, approximately 62-mile-long, single-circuit 345 kilovolt (kV) transmission line on double-circuit capable structures from Minnesota Power’s Iron Range Substation near Grand Rapids in Itasca County, Minnesota, to Minnesota Power’s St. Louis County Substation near Hermantown in St. Louis County, Minnesota.
  • A new, approximately 1-mile-long double-circuit 345 kV transmission line from Minnesota Power’s St. Louis County Substation to American Transmission Company’s Arrowhead Substation near Hermantown, in St. Louis County, Minnesota.

Project Need

The ISA Transmission Project is one of 24 projects approved in December 2024 by the Midcontinent Independent System Operator. It is part of the second phase of the regional grid operator’s Long-Range Transmission Planning known as Tranche 2.1.

As a part of this larger portfolio, the ISA Transmission Project will:

  • Enhance grid reliability in the Upper Midwest as grid operating conditions become more variable
  • Increase grid efficiency as energy is transferred from where it is produced to where it is needed
  • Meet the growing demand for reliable clean energy in the Upper Midwest

Project Interactive Map

Minnesota Power is considering possible routes, with the goal of locating the project within existing high-voltage transmission line corridors. Minnesota laws guide the route development process to help minimize impacts on people and the environment. Your input will be critical as we develop our route proposals.
